Sarah Orne Jewett’s masterpiece, The Country of the Pointed Firs, and her subsequent Dunnet Landing Stories have been highly regarded since their first appearance. Willa Cather called the work an American classic and foresaw a prominent place for Jewett’s stories in the canon of American literature. Jewett’s romantic depictions of life among the coastal village people of Maine in the mid-nineteenth century, stongly evoking their connection to the land and the sea, have long been heralded for their carefully crafted characters and loving descriptions of the natural world.
